The director of the recently released title Nier: Automata, Yoko Taro, took to Twitter recently to state that he would like to see Sony develop a PS Vita successor.
Many fans still carry around the little handheld machine, however, Sony has all but abandoned the Vita. If Sony were to make a new handheld device will it be any better? Can it compete with the Switch? All these factors play in, especially when the company is trying to push its newest device — PS VR.
However, that doesn’t stop people like Yoko Taro wanting to see a PS Vita, check out his tweet down below (translated by DualShockers)
VITA の後継機が欲しいなあ。Switch が出たから少し気持ちは落ち着いてるけど、もうちょっと小型の次世代携帯ゲーム機が触りたい。物理キーの無いスマートフォンでは満たされない欲望を満たしたい。

“I want a Vita successor. While I feel a bit relieved since the Switch appeared, I’d like a slightly smaller next-generation portable game machine. I’d like to satisfy the desire that cannot be satisfied by smartphones, that don’t have physical buttons.”
With the success of the Switch, perhaps Sony will reconsider a PS Vita successor. But like mentioned above, there is a lot of factors that must be considered.
