Resident Evil 6 On-Disc Items are Unlockables and Not Paid DLC, Capcom Issues Response

October 8, 2012 by Alex Co

Confusing is spreading around the interwebs that Capcom has on-disc DLC and is holding it to be bought by players at a later date. Read on why that’s not the case.

The internet is buzzing today with news that Capcom has hidden some files on Resident Evil 6's disc as part of a DLC pack that will be released at a later date.

These files has been unearthed by YouTube user FluffyQuack who posted the following videos. Needless to say, the videos contain massive spoilers, so if you've yet to finish the game, I suggest not watching them.

No Hope Difficulty

Costumes and Melee

All Character Taunts

While the internet has been quick to raise their pitchforks and blame Capcom for being greedy, it's worth noting that these are FREE unlockables that are awarded via ResidentEvil.net. In short, you don't need to pay anything to be able to access the content show in the video — at least, not the costumes and taunts, anyway.

While, the "No Hope" difficulty could be part of a DLC, it remains to be seen if it will be paid DLC or not.

Speaking of which, a Capcom representative (via Eurogamer) has admitted that one piece of Resident Evil 6's DLC requires downloaded data and on-disc data to work, but declined to offer anything more concrete than that. It's easy to speculate that this might pertain to the No Hope difficulty, but again, we're not sure on anything just yet.

Capcom has also issued an official response on these "revelations" and you can read it below.

We still have unannounced DLC for RE6 that will be revealed in the coming months and while virtually all such content will not be on the disc there will be one piece of content, that for technical reasons, requires the use of a combination of newly downloaded data and data that is included on the retail game disc.

So, there you have it. This isn't as big of an "issue" as most people thought it was. Of course, we're not saying Capcom is never charging for DLC that's already on Resident Evil 6's disc, it's just that it's not happening now with the data that was mined.

If Capcom were to make a paid DLC for Resident Evil 6, what would you want it to include? Would it matter that much if parts of it was already on-disc or is it fine as long as it's a hefty expansion?
