FFXV is an immensely popular genre around the world (I mean, just by judging the amount of game releases you can totally see why) and especially popular in Japan considering Square Enix is based there.
A report by dualshockers shows that there have been 88,533 digital sales during the period of launch until just before the holidays in Japan. In total there are a just over a million sales of digital and physical copies in Japan alone.
So far the game has had a positive overall critical acclaim, although falling short in some areas – it will be interesting to see how well the upcoming DLC Lands will aid in selling more copies.
