Lance Armstrong was recently disqualified from all of his Le Tour de France titles for 'boosting' to win his titles. Whether he actually did so remains up in the air, but Armstrong isn't contesting it. Similarly, four teams were disqualified from Olympic Badminton for colluding to fix their match scores.
Needless to say, cheating is nothing new in the world of professional sports, and neither is professional gaming immune to these depredations by bad players.
The Major League Gaming (MLG) organization announced today that they will not be awarding the 1st and 2nd place finishers for the Summer Championship League of Legends Event, as the two final teams: Curse NA and Team Dignitas performed the undignified act of colluding to attain their positions.
Both teams were disqualified for intentionally forfeiting their games and manipulating the championship's bracket system.
"This is in clear violation of both the letter and spirit of MLG’s Official Pro Circuit Conduct Rules: “competitors may not intentionally Forfeit a Game or conspire to manipulate Rankings or Brackets.” As such, both teams have been disqualified, and no placements or prize money will be awarded."
The game's developers and sponsors, Riot Games, has agreed with the decision and wwill not be awarding Circuit points to either team—both of which were regarded the top players in the community.
