Sony sold an impression 6.2 million PlayStation 4 systems during the holiday season, the company announced today. As of January 1, 2017, Sony has sold a whopping 53.4 million PS4 systems worldwide since its launch in 2013. During the holiday period, Sony sold 50.4 million PS4 games at retail and digitally.
“We are truly grateful for the tremendous support from our fans and partners, which has helped to make this holiday season one of the best in our history,” Sony Interactive Entertainment president Andrew House said in a statement.
“We will aim to continue the momentum this year by broadening the PS4 title portfolio, further enriching the revolutionary gaming experiences on PlayStation VR and high quality gaming experience on PlayStation 4 Pro, while also expanding network services. We will remain steadfast in making the PS4 the best place to play.”
Sony announced that the PS4, including the base model, the PS4 Slim, and the PS4 Pro had combined to sell more than 50 million units at the start of December. One aspect that likely helped to boost sales was the fact that the PS4 had a temporary December price cut, which dropped the unit down to $250.
