Over five months have passed since the initial release of Mass Effect 3, and according to compiled data only 42 percent of players have actually finished the game. For comparison, Mass Effect 2 saw 56 percent of players completing the final mission.
In a talk at GDC Europe, BioWare's online development director Fernando Melo talked about making money through DLC, online passes, and micro-transactions, but he wasn't all business. Melo touched on the amount of players that have completed Mass Effect 3 compared to its predecessor. With the release of ME3 impending, gamers pushed ME2 to completion, actually boosting the 56 percent even higher.
These numbers are actually anomalies in the gaming industry. A typical video game will average a completion rate of less than 20 percent of players, so in that respect, the Mass Effect franchise is doing incredibly well. In the relative scheme of things, a lower completion percentage for the third title compared to the second could be related to the bad press the ending of Mass Effect 3 has received.
