While Nintendo might have failed to live up to fan expectations regarding the Wii U at this year's E3, it's not as important as impressing third-party studios…y'know, coz they're the ones making the games.
Unfortunately, it seems one of the most important third-party publisher was not impressed with what they saw from Nintendo at E3. This publisher is none other than Take-Two — yes, the same Take-Two that publishes the Grand Thef Auto franchise for Rockstar Games.
The publisher itself will be supporting the Wii U with sports (NBA 2K, etc.) and family games, but its core franchises (GTA, Red Dead, BioShock, etc.) are notably absent from the list of "partners;" and it seems that won't be changing anytime soon.
According to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, "We haven't announced anything," this is in reference to Take-Two moving some of its mature core games to the Wii U. Not only that, but Zelnick admits that he's "skeptical" of the Wii U.
This statement doesn't mean that Zelnick is pessimistic of next-gen as a whole though, on the contrary, he's eager to see the next generation happen as he thinks this is a good chance for Take-Two to continue to advance in its position among the big boys in the industry.
For a company like ours, it's a great opportunity…[New console launches] separate the winners from the losers — and we fully expect to be one of the winners.
I gather, this is not the sort of news Nintendo wants hear out of Zelnick, no? Does this mean we won't see Grand Theft Auto or Take-Two's other mature core games on the Wii U? Only time will tell for now.
Is this news a reason for concern among Nintendo and its fans or can the Wii U exist without any mature core titles?
