CD Projekt has just announced the new AAA title it's working on, and it's set in the Pen & Paper RPG world of Cyberpunk by Mike Pondsmith. Pondsmith developed Cyberpunk in 1988—a setting which continues to flourish, with spans over 44 handbooks to date.
At the conference, CD Projekt's Marcin Iwinski promised that this game would have all of the hallmarks of the Witcher series. Their upcoming RPG will be designed for mature and demanding players, and the game will be richly detailed, non-linear, and with a complex and gripping story.
This time around, players will experience the world through their own, unique characters chosen from different classes, the details of which are yet to be fully revealed. Playing as anything from hackers to mercenaries, players will equip with vast selection of cybernetic implants and deadly weapons. As in the Witcher series, players will face morally ambiguous choices, their actions influencing events in the world at large and the fate of the individuals they encounter.
Heavily inspired by Blade Runner, the Cyberpunk experience is described as a "rich, futuristic world with ultra modern technology" set in a decadent and degenerated human society.
We've experienced cyberpunk-themed games in titles like Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Binary Domain in recent years, and CD Projekt's upcoming game will be the next big thing on the market. It remains unnamed for now.
CD Projekt will be working closely with Cyberpunk's creator Mike Pondsmith to develop their title.
