Recently Microsoft has been under fire from Motorola over some patent infringements. The XBOX 360 slim uses some technology that Motorola has patented and thus Motorola is now in a legal dispute with Microsoft. Recently the console was banned in Germany, but that judgement had a “temporary injuction†put in place so the ban won’t take effect right away.
Now the threat is closing in on the United States. A judge recently recommended that the two styles of the slim version be banned in the United States and that all existing stock of the item should be taken off the shelves and never sold again. The judge works for the International Trade Commission and his statement is still being deliberated by said agency.
If the International Trade Commission does decide to go through with the Judge’s recommendation then the final vote falls into Barack Obama’s hands, the President of the United States.
The government hasn’t been too keen on gamer concerns what with CISPA, SOPA, and PIPA floating about. So it’s really hard to tell what Mr. Obama will do in regards to this matter. After all, business is business.
Microsoft is supposedly already working on their next gen console, so they might want to start pushing that forward if this ban spreads.
