Retail Titles Will be Available For Download as Well at Wii U’s Launch

April 26, 2012 by Ron Taylor

Nintedo says that games slated for retail release will also be downloadable upon the launch of the Wii U.

Wii U

It might be too much to call it an info-dump, but Nintedno's financial briefing tonight is providing some interesting tidbits indeed.

Siliconera reports the console will feature the ability to download titles available at retail from the system's launch onward. Nintendo says the first instance of this will be New Super Mario Bros. 2.

This actually provides more questions than answers. Will this be the standard for all 3DS games? All Wii U titles? Both? The specifics will certainly interesting to find out. Sony just this year started putting up download versions of the biggest AAA releases on PS3, on to PSN simultaneously this year. They've also been adding download versions of older disc games at a steady rate weekly (Battlefield 3 went up last week for instance). Microsoft only so rarely makes additions to it's Xbox 360 On Demand list of download titles.

Nintendo may be far from becoming the lead in this area, but getting involved at the console's launch is something to be excited about.
