Gearbox Raised Borderlands 4 Drop Rates 5X Through The Holidays – And They “Wanna See Something”

December 19, 2025 by Ryan Parreno

Gearbox is hardly done with Borderlands 4.

Gearbox has given Borderlands 4 players a big holiday gift.

They made this announcement on Twitter:

Your Weekly Endgame Activities reset with today’s Minor Update for Borderlands 4.

For a limited time, we’re featuring multiple True Bosses at once and a limited-time drop rate increase of up to 5x on Legendary gear.

The patch notes also said this:

To close out 2025, we’re mixing things up with a Triple Threat of Big Encore Bosses and a Season’s Lootings increase to Legendary drop rates for bosses!

Starting today, this Triple Threat will feature THREE True Bosses at once while our team logs off to celebrate Mercenary Day with our loved ones. We’ll resume our weekly rotation of bosses with our Minor Update on January 8, 2026!

Meanwhile, during Season’s Lootings you’ll be up to 5x more likely to get a Legendary drop (outside of Big Encore Bosses and Bloomreaper) as you grind for loot while this effect is live, also until January 8!

Legendary loot drops will still be infrequent enough to feel special, in keeping with our overall design intent.

As you may have expected, you will need to restart your game to make sure this new update goes through.

The Community Was Waiting On These Drop Rates

Yesterday, associate creative director Grant Kao teased a change to drop rates. Community member Ki11er Six chimed in on this:

Today is a BIG potentially turning point for #Borderlands4 if the devs FIX Dedicated Boss Drop Rates to be a flat 7 to 10% across the board, then we are back on the right track.

Up next: we NEED Dialogue Skip.

A few hours later, Ki11er Six jumped in and tested the game after this latest update. When he was asked how he felt about the drop rates, he said this:

Better for sure, but then they really couldn’t have been much worse

But then, there seems to be an extra twist to this change.

Gearbox Senior Project Producer Mario Rodriguez responded to JoltzDude139, who lamented that the increased drop rates are only scheduled until January 8:

Who knows, maybe we wanna see something…

What Does Gearbox Want To See?

Obviously, this is part of the post release support as Gearbox tries to figure out the balance that players want to build Borderlands 4’s endgame.

It would be fair to say that Gearbox could have come up with a satisfactory endgame the first time, but there’s no need to set unreasonable expectations.

Whatever Gearbox needed to fix at launch, they can fix in the coming months. And they still have opportunities to rally back in the future, with both the cross-platform cross-progression save, and the looming Nintendo Switch 2 port.
