Grand Theft Auto 6 won at this year’s The Game Awards – but at what cost?

As reported by RockstarIntel, the game did win the Most Anticipated Game Award for 2025. It already won this award in 2024, so it holds the unusual distinction of winning it two years in a row.

Why This Is Such A Dubious Distinction

We already pointed this out when Grand Theft Auto 6 earned this nomination. But there’s a negative connotation to getting this award two years in a row.

That is, of course, the fact that Rockstar is continuing to keep their fans waiting for the game to finally release. Before these awards nominations even came up, we already knew that the game was going to get delayed.

So the second delay to November 2026 was a real blow to fans. But of course, we understand that Rockstar’s developers are only human.

Yes, Grand Theft Auto 6 Still Deserves This Award

Some fans may say this is unfair, but that’s just the way it goes. Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to be the biggest launch of any video game of all time. This continuing series of delays had not changed that and is unlikely to change it, either.

Rockstar Was Already Known For Delaying Games Anyway

This is not to dismiss the complaints from fans who are disappointed by these delays. But Rockstar does have a track record of delaying their games past their original announced release date.

And this was the case with the best games that the studio has released, including Red Dead Redemption 2. When Rockstar chooses to delay their games, you can be sure that they have good reasons to do so.

One Day, Grand Theft Auto 6 Will Win The Awards That Matter

As one of the biggest franchises in the industry, we pretty much expect Grand Theft Auto 6 to actually sweep the The Game Awards and the other award shows when it comes out.

That’s not coming from some blind fandom. Rockstar is more or less dependable when it comes to making games at that level, that really earns their accolades.

For better or worse, their influence leaks to other games and developers too. And this time, we can expect to see not only a bigger open world that can allow you to do more and more things.

We expect a story unlike any that Rockstar has told before, and if they nail it, it could change what we expect from our video game stories too.

Congrats to the following winners: @Battlefield 6- Best Audio Design, @MoistCr1TiKaL– Content Creator of the Year, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves- Best Fighting Game and Grand Theft Auto VI- Most Anticipated Game! #TheGameAwards @ea @fatalfury_PR @snkPofficial @rockstargames pic.twitter.com/V0MjCnL7zT
