Digital Eclipse has shared the finer details on adding Mortal Kombat Gold to Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection.

Dan Amrich of Digital Eclipse went on record with MKSecrets about adding the game. Amrich got straight to the point:
Do we like Mortal Kombat Gold? Yes. Did we hear that you asked for it? Yes. Do we want it? Yes. Is it something we’d like to do sometime in the future? We would love to. Do we have plans to do it right now? No. Should you expect it? No.
So, I understand the appeal of Mortal Kombat Gold. I know why everybody wants it. Uh, but we’re just not ready to do it yet. I’m hoping maybe we could do it, you know.
Why Were Fans Looking For Mortal Kombat Gold In Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection?
Digital Eclipse is generally known for being completist when it comes to their video game collections and anthologies. They don’t always get all the games from a single franchise or creator. But they clearly do the best they can to do so.
They slowly teased each game that would be included in Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection. As things stand, they have confirmed the original trilogy of Mortal Kombat arcade games, all their 1990s home console conversions, Mortal Kombat Mythologies and Mortal Kombat Special Forces for the PlayStation, and all the portable games, including the Game Boy Advance games.
They also got in Mortal Kombat 4, but specifically only the arcade version of the game. This game also came to the Nintendo 64, PlayStation, and Game Boy Color, but those ports also didn’t make the cut.
However, fans clamored for Mortal Kombat Gold for a reason. This was an updated version of Mortal Kombat 4, and the only Mortal Kombat that came to the Dreamcast. While it received poor reviews, fans remember it for the added characters and stages.
There Were Technical Considerations Too
Amrich also spoke about the technical factors that also hamper them from making it happen.
You know, the PS5 and the Switch One are very different hardware platforms and they have different capabilities. That is a factor, too. There’s also how do we legally do emulation? There’s things like BIOS files and things that we have to be able to be aware of.
So, it’s not just a desire, and it’s certainly not ignorance on our part to say, well, who cares about that? Of course we care about that. But there are several factors, everything from legal to tech that do factor into that.
So that’s why Mortal Kombat Gold is not in there. It’s not that we didn’t hear you asking. It’s that we’re not prepared to do it yet, but we want to get there. We just got to PlayStation. Dreamcast is on the horizon, right? Like how many great games would we be able to bring back to people if we could do a good Dreamcast emulation?
Digital Eclipse is not saying it’s impossible or that they aren’t ever going to do it. They make it clear that this was just one job that was a little bit too much to make it to this project.
Strangely enough, Capcom managed to bring their Dreamcast games to Capcom Fighting Collection 2. On the flip side, they couldn’t include their PlayStation games.
Ultimately, we know that fans themselves have been making great emulators for these games too. When the technical expertise, licensing, and budgets all come together, we’ll get these other games in due time as well.
