Treyarch: Fans Of Black Ops 2 Will Have A “Good Time” In Call Of Duty Black Ops 7

June 30, 2025 by Ryan Parreno

You don’t evoke a classic game like that if you aren’t at least trying to live up to it.

Treyarch has dropped a huge tease for Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7.

Associate Design Director Kevin Drew made an appearance at this year’s Call Of Duty League Championships, and he shared a message for the eSports fans in the audience. As shared by CharlieIntel on Twitter, Drew said this:

If you’re a fan of Black Ops 2 back in the day, especially if you’re a fan of Black Ops 2 competitive, you’re gonna have a good time in Black Ops 7.

Now, if you are a younger gamer, this may not necessarily ring a bell to you. Of course, Microsoft reactivated the servers for Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2, so on your newest Xbox, or even your Xbox 360, you could load up the original 2012 game and check it out for yourself there, or also play it on Steam. And if you did do that, you may find that the game has been incredibly hacked and compromised, but outside of that, you may not necessarily be all that impressed with it. The graphics certainly won’t be as good as newer games, and there’s a lot less in there.

Fans who remember Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2 as the best in the franchise may partly be seeing the game through nostalgia glasses. Here’s a video that talks about 10 Mandela effects players experienced in the game when they go back to play it today. But there’s also some kernel to it that experienced players can say is true, after comparing their experience with all the other games. It’s also a common enough sentiment that we can at least say there’s some consensus around it.

One element that will be easy to identify is Pick 10. Fans of this game will say this is the best create-a-class system in the franchise.  Other elements they introduced are Scorestreaks, which replaced killstreaks with objective based scores. It had a progression system which allowed you to prestige weapons, a competitive mode called League Play, and a very popular Zombies mode with its own story and modes.

We do suspect, beyond the particular gameplay elements, fans may be nostalgic for the zeitgeist that Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2, as one of the last games on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 before the 8th generation came in (and as a fun piece of trivia, one of the two Wii U releases in the franchise). Drew didn’t exactly promise that they would try to recreate that original Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2 experience in Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7. So maybe they do understand that rather than trying to recapture lighting in the bottle, fans want a multiplayer experience that was just as satisfying as it was. It remains to be seen how much Treyarch will live up to this promise, but at the very least, they just promised it.
