Nintendo has announced that it just breached 4.5 million sales in the United States alone since its release on March 27 almost a year ago.
Since its launch, the platform has seen games like Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7. This year, games like Resident Evil Revelations, Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D, and Tekken 3D Prime Edition have been released for the platform thus far. Kid Icarus: Uprising and Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir are soon to join them, with Nintendo as their publisher.
The sales of the Nintendo 3DS within its first year alone surpass that of the Nintendo DS during the same period in 2004 by 2.2 million units, making it the most successful handheld gaming device to date. Software sales have also doubled from 58 million in 12 months to 100+ million.
The Nintendo DS, DSLite, DSi and DSi XL systems have sold over 51 million units thus far. Nintendo hopes to achieve the same success with its 3DS system, which is sure to see future iterations.
