While it may be April 2nd right now, that doesn’t mean that we can’t still talk about what happened on April 1st. After all, there was a LOT going on that day, and many people were issuing all kinds of statements and reports that we all knew were fake, but they posted them anyway on the off chance that some of them would be fooled. One such poster was none other than Roblox. On the 31st, they posted on Twitter that a big announcement would happen the following day. Sure enough, it made a “reveal” that had to do with…a new movie that was coming out.
Yes, as in “The Roblox Movie.” They made a fake trailer featuring its game and saying it was coming out next year. Again, obviously, this was fake, and a lot of people got a good laugh out of it, especially since the “trailer” was nothing but in-game footage and some fancy animation to make it seem at least a little plausible. You can judge the effort for yourself by checking out the trailer below:
There’s a lot of irony to something like this trailer, and it goes a bit deeper than you might think. First and foremost, it’s not impossible to think that a movie like this could happen. After all, LEGO had two movies, not to mention multiple TV series that had impressive lengths if you look into them. Second, we know that Minecraft is about to drop its movie, and it’s one of the most popular video games ever. So, given the popularity of this particular franchise, it’s not impossible to think that someone would attempt to ‘cash in’ and make some kind of movie of it.
That brings us to the other layer of this irony: a company is trying to make animated content within the game’s world. The goal is to make bite-sized content that would be uploaded to places like YouTube and showcase the game universe in a different way. The content is set to start releasing later this year, so you won’t have to wait too long until something drops for it.
As for a more “official” kind of film, you might have to wait a lot longer for that one, especially due to the fact that just because it’s a popular game…doesn’t mean it’ll be a box office hit. Not to mention, the visual style “isn’t for everyone” and would be hard to adapt.
