LEGO is, by and large, one of the coolest toy brands in the world. It’s the simplest of concepts, and it has transformed into a massive empire of crossovers, animated movies, and TV shows, and, of course, been transformed into NUMEROUS video game titles. The latest is LEGO Horizon Adventures, which sees the adventures of Aloy turned into a unique “brick adventure” that two teams brought to life. However, on March 1st, you’ll get to see the reverse of this, where an official LEGO set of the game will be available for purchase. As you might expect, the teams are excited about this.
On the PlayStation Blog, team members from the title and the LEGO set talked about what it was like seeing the game brought into this form. Guerrilla Games’ Stephane Varrault had this to say about what was going on:
“Working with LEGO bricks and trying to replicate all the machines in this universe forces you to think about abstraction, and abstraction is good for a designer because you start to think about the essence of fun. It’s about going back to the essentials.”
You might think that building everything in LEGO is easy due to the very nature of the LEGO brand. However, when you think about Aloy’s world and the rather complex creatures and items that reside in it, it can be hard to get that into the “right shapes” for LEGOs to build with. Senior Model Designer Joseph Kyde at The LEGO Group noted this problem with one particular item in the set:
“The hexagonal cargo pod was an extremely challenging build to make out of LEGO elements and it was one of my favorite examples of a problem-solving exercise for this set.”
It apparently took multiple iterations for him to get the cargo pod to work, but he was able to do it! Other members of the team were excited for fans to get their hands on the set, build the characters and monsters, and then “have their own adventures.” That is, by definition, most of the fun when it comes to LEGO, so it’s nice to see them have that “childlike wonder” when thinking about how others would interact with it.
The team also praised the detail of the LEGO Horizon Adventures set, and when you look at the figures and how much they resemble their gaming counterparts, you can see why that praise is deserved.
