\Look, there are video games out there that you look at and go, “Yeah, that’ll be a bloody game to play.” For the record, that’s fine! Not all games are meant to be “happy-go-lucky adventures” or something you can “bring the whole family together to play.” Sometimes, you need a game that is all about violence and taking out enemies with tons of epic weaponry and with extreme prejudice. Doom The Dark Ages will be one such title that fulfills such a “need” within certain games. The team behind it certainly hasn’t shied away from its gore-filled gameplay, and so it shouldn’t be a surprise that a rating for the title doesn’t hide its violence either.
The rating in question comes from the IMDA. They’re not the ESRB, but they did break down Doom The Dark Ages and explained just how much “gory fun” you’ll have in the title:
“There are frequent depictions of violence and gore during gameplay. Blood splatters when enemies are struck, and they can explode in a burst of blood and body parts leaving bloodstains on surfaces such as the ground, the protagonist’s weapons and visor. When enemies take sufficient damage, they can enter a “dazed” state allowing the player to execute a Gory Kill, which results in the enemy being bisected, dismembered or disembowelled.”
So, yeah, a standard game in this series. Unsurprisingly, the IMDA gave the title a rating of 18+, and again, that fits the mold and standard of this franchise.
As revealed in the special Developer Direct that happened last month, the game will take place in a unique version of the “Middle Ages” during a conflict between certain realms. You are once again the Doomslayer, but this time, you’ll see their true origins and how you are tied to all the events that continue to happen.
The team made it clear that everything in this time and place is a bit more “barbaric,” including the weapons you’ll wield. You’ll have guns, don’t worry about that, but you’ll also have plenty of melee weapons to have fun with, including a chainsaw shield that you can use to slice and dice enemies with glee. There are also mechanized dragons you can ride, massive mechs you can pilot, and a vast world full of hidden goodies that can unlock even more powers and abilities to help you take on the hordes of enemies you’ll soon be facing.
The game arrives on console and PC on May 15th.
