When HBO released the adaptation of The Last of Us, fans were blown away. Plenty of fans were hesitant and kept expectations low after the show was announced. Normally, when a video game is adapted into a movie or TV series, it doesn’t typically end well. However, that wasn’t the case here, as the show took great care to keep up with the source material. Even Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann was attached to the show to help ensure a successful adaptation.
Now, we are gearing up for a second season. A couple of years after the first season dropped, HBO is nearing the release of season two this April. However, we already knew that season two wouldn’t be able to showcase all of the story elements from The Last of Us Part II. That was quite a behemoth of a video game, and it’s going to take more than a single season to tell its story.
Recently, Deadline had the chance to speak with HBO’s EVP Francesca Orsi. During their conversation, the topic of The Last of Us came up, and Orsi noted that they don’t have an end game planned out yet for this show. Instead, they did note that there are plans for another season after season two. Likewise, they feel there will likely be a fourth season to help bring this show to a close.
We don’t have a complete or final plan, but I think it’s looking like four seasons. I wouldn’t want to confirm that, but it’s looking like this season and then two more seasons after this and we’re done. – Francesca Orsi
It’s not a confirmation, so don’t go into season two expecting we will get at least four seasons. There’s a chance we might see this show continue after season four. But at the moment, the HBO EVP feels we will see some closure by season four.
Again, we don’t know what the show has planned for viewers. It does look like there will be some deviations from the video game. But beyond that, we’re left waiting for the upcoming season to debut in April before we learn how far we get into the second game’s narrative.
