Elden Ring Nightreign Developers Didn’t Want To Just Follow Trends

February 3, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

Developers were not actively bringing specific elements from other popular titles to this game.

Elden Ring fans were probably delighted to see the official announcement of Elden Ring Nightreign last year. However, it’s going to be a different kind of experience. For those of you thinking that FromSoftware might be just chasing trends, they want to ensure fans that’s far from the case. In a new interview featuring the game director, Junya Ishizaki, developers actively worked to bring elements that made sense to this game.

Thanks to GamesRadar, we’re learning about a recent magazine issue featuring an interview with Junya Ishizaki on PC Gamer. During their conversation, it was unveiled that the focus around this upcoming game was condensing the experience down. Everything was made to feel like players were preparing for a boss fight.

Fortunately, the developers wanted to focus on a gameplay experience that made sense rather than developing around a specific popular element. If you haven’t seen this game, it’s an upcoming cooperative spinoff for Elden Ring.

Players will be dropped in a procedurally generated Limgrave, where teams of three will prepare for a boss battle. This is done by exploring the world and fighting off different beasts. Cooperative gameplay is the focus here, but it is said that you can go through this game solo if you wish.

“For this new sense of accomplishment that you wouldn’t quite find with Elden Ring or our previous titles, we felt like we needed some new mechanics and some new elements to add into that mix. We’ve never really held the stance ‘let’s absolutely not do anything that other companies are doing or not follow any trends.’ So we didn’t really see this as chasing a trend, but we saw these as interesting elements that could work well within our multiplayer-focused session-based gameplay.” – Junya Ishizaki

Unfortunately, we don’t know when exactly Elden Ring Nightreign will land in the marketplace. Currently, the developers are aiming for a launch this year. It will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S platforms when it is released.
