It’s always a bummer to hear some fan projects get killed by the IP rights holder. We’ve seen them pop up with a community of fans rallying behind the team working on the game or mod. Meanwhile, we’ve also seen quite a few of those projects never finish because of the IP owners’ right to demand takedown. Today, we’re finding out that a recent GTA 5 mod that proved incredibly popular is no longer available.
Liberty City Preservation Project was a mod that brought back Liberty City within Grand Theft Auto V. The mod took years as developers worked carefully to replicate the city for the game. Once it was released to the market online, fans quickly took to the mod. Players could travel to Liberty City via a plane when playing single-player.
However, thanks to VG247, we’re finding out that the modding team that goes by the name World Travel alerted followers on their Discord server that Rockstar Games got in contact with the team. The modders note that this was not a takedown demand, but after a conversation, they mutually agreed to remove the mod from the web. This is still, I imagine, a gut punch for the team that spent years bringing this overhaul of Liberty City to GTA 5.
At any rate, the mod is no longer available to download officially. It’s also risky to download the mod from other sources, as you never know what might have been added to the installation files.
For now, players are waiting for the next Grand Theft Auto game to hit the marketplace. We know Rockstar Games is hard at work with Grand Theft Auto 6.
