Remedy Is Updating Control Next Year, To Unlock “Previously Released Content”

November 20, 2024 by Ryan Parreno

It sounds like Remedy was hoping someone was going to find this content.

Remedy Entertainment has made an interesting announcement regarding their 2019 action-adventure title Control.

Posting from their official Bluesky account, they said this:

“News from our Capital Markets Day:

  • Alan Wake 2 has sold over 1.8M units
  • Control Ultimate Edition will release on Mac February 12th, 2025
  • Control 2 will be an action RPG
  • Control will receive a free update in early 2025, unlocking some previously released content”

We already reported on Remedy’s announcement that they were making Control 2 as an action RPG. But since we are not going to get that title in a few years, it makes sense that Remedy would placate fans by pushing an update on the current game now.

But what’s interesting is that they referred to this as ‘previously released content’. If the content had already been released, why did they have to unlock it? For those who don’t remember, Remedy published two DLCs for Control. While the base game originally released in 2019, The Foundation came out in March 2020, and AWE, the Alan Wake crossover, came out in August of that same year. Aside from that, Remedy was generous in releasing non-story-based updates as well.

What their statement implies is that Remedy was expecting their dedicated fans to have found this previously released content in the game on their own, and also find the way to unlock it. We have to admit, we don’t know that much about Remedy’s fan community, if they have that many dataminers in them. We have to imagine if they exist, they must have a few regrets over Remedy making the announcement before they could have even suspected this was a thing.

In any case, Remedy and Control fans seem to already have something to look forward to as early as next year. This big secret ‘previously released content’ must be compelling, if they’re willing to get it out in what we already know will be a fully packed 2025.

But maybe it will tie into the game Remedy is planning to release in 2025, FBC: Firebreak. We have to imagine that this Control spinoff will also have some of the game’s shooter action DNA, but beyond that, who knows? Remedy has a good reputation with their fans, so they seem to have some plans on how to monetize their first foray into live service games that will keep their fans placated and satisfied.

Maybe this ‘previously released content’ will turn out to be some FBC: Firebreak demo? We’re going to see soon enough.
