Video game adaptations into films and television series are nothing new. We’ve seen them for years, and we often saw more misses than hits during that time. But that’s kind of changed lately as more video game IPs are getting the care they deserve when being adapted into a different medium. So, likely, fans were expecting a better product than what they received when it came to the Borderlands movie. As I’m sure you are all very aware, the movie was released and did terribly.
Reviews were terrible; it had a poor run in theaters and fell short of recouping funds for what it cost to make and market this film. So, while most might be keen on sweeping this under the rug, Take-Two’s CEO Strauss Zelnick noted at least one area in which the film did well. Thanks to a report from the VGC, we’re finding out that during a recent earnings call, Take-Two’s CEO was asked about the movie flop.
According to Strauss, while the Borderlands film was a disappointment, there was a boost in catalog sales. As a result, there is a positive to producing films and television series. At the same time, we don’t know just how big of an impact this movie had when it came to video game units being moved. Still, this was at least one positive spin Take-Two could use for this movie flop.
Of course, it doesn’t seem to steer away from the idea of other adaptations for Take-Two. Strauss noted that they would be very selective about what is licensed out going forward. We don’t know of anything new that was picked up to be turned into a television series or movie. However, there was already news of a Netflix BioShock adaptation, but we haven’t seen anything new regarding that production quite yet.
