There is plenty of hype for Grand Theft Auto VI. Years before this game was officially announced, fans were pleading for the studio to release the next installment. After all, Grand Theft Auto V has lasted quite a long time, so it makes sense that some players are ready for a change of scenery rather than sticking with Los Santos. Regardless, we now know GTA 6 is coming in 2025, but if you plan to pick this one up on PC, you might be waiting a while.
We know GTA 6 is in development, with plans to release the game in 2025. However, there was no mention of the game launching on PC, so some fans have been speculating as to how much longer they might be waiting until the upcoming GTA installment lands on their platform of choice. Well, according to one former developer, that wait could last until sometime in 2027.
Obbe Vermeij is a former Rockstar Games technical director who replied to a fan on X about the PC release. All Obbe stated was that it would be 2027, but that’s, of course, potentially just a joke or speculation on their part. However, they are confident we won’t see a PC release at launch, as they explained why the PV version takes longer to release.
Obbe mentioned that the console sales were initially so much bigger than PC releases, making it a no-brainer to put the PC version on the back burner. However, that’s since changed, and now a few other factors are why developers are pushing the PC release further back. For starters, there is a lot more optimization for PC releases as developers have to account for a variety of hardware configurations. Because of that, there are always going to be some bugs that need to be cleared out, and that is likely not what the press developers want to focus on at launch. That bad PC press could taint the console version despite console versions being clean.
Additionally, there is a marketing campaign to consider. To do all the platforms at once would be a big expense, so staggering the releases could help ease this burden. But, at the end of the day, this franchise is quite the behemoth. I’m sure it won’t matter much when this game drops, as Rockstar Games will see players flock to the marketplace for a copy.
