There is a ton of hype about Bethesda’s dive back into The Elder Scrolls franchise. We know this is the next IP to get picked up and brought to the marketplace after they wrap up on Starfield’s DLC expansions. While we don’t know much about The Elder Scrolls 6, expectations might already be set way too high.
Bruce Nesmith is a former Bethesda designer who worked on several iconic games before departing after Starfield. Recently, Bruce was featured on the Kiwi Talkz YouTube channel, where he discussed his time working on the various games and the behind-the-scenes work within Bethesda. However, the topic of sequels came up, as did the difficulty developers find themselves in after releasing massive hits.
For instance, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was a huge hit. It’s a game that was incredibly beloved by fans worldwide and still gets picked up and played to this day. The experience is a thrilling one filled with exploration and adventure. So now, with this huge hit on their hands, moving on to a sequel will be tough.
Bruce mentioned that expectations might be too high, and it will be near impossible to meet them. While it’s still likely to be an incredible game, the marketing team might have to work their best to set some expectations for players regarding this highly anticipated installment.
After all, Skyrim spawned so many incredible fantasy games. We also saw other massive RPGs hit and set the bar even higher. The former Bethesda designer gave an example of how Larian Studios will face the same problem as Bethesda now that Baldur’s Gate 3 has become such a worldwide hit.
Again, we’re a good ways off before we get our hands on The Elder Scrolls 6. But we’re certainly interested to see how this game meets some expectations fans placed on this installment after years of waiting for the next mainline game.
