The rumors about Final Fantasy games coming to Xbox have been coming fast and easy. Now, more and more people are coming out to corroborate them, and add even more games.
Rumors about Final Fantasy games returning to Xbox after Final Fantasy XV have been going on for years. Of course, now the rumors are credible after Square Enix officially brought Final Fantasy XIV to Xbox Series X|S. Their staff have talked positively about bringing more games to Xbox recently as well.
Last month, NateDrake went forward with the rumor that Final Fantasy 16 would be coming to Xbox. And then last week, Middle Aged Gamer Guy and Jez Corden both revealed their rumor that Final Fantasy VII Remake would also be coming in the clutch for Team Green.
This weekend started a new wave of rumors, starting with Jez Corden in the latest episode of the Xbox Two podcast. Jez said this:
“I do think we are going to get something Final Fantasy-related [at Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show event]. I’ve heard that the whole slate’s on the docket, including Final Fantasy 7, and 16, and the Pixel Remasters.
A lot of people were wondering, like, has Sony locked down Final Fantasy 7 forever? I’ve heard that is not the case and that FF7 will eventually come to Xbox. I don’t know when it will and I don’t know if it will be in the first wave.”
And now we reintroduce you to Ryan from the Bronx, FKA Midori, FKA MysticDistance. He seems to go by his real first name now, and he has also disclosed that he is an independent security researcher and freelance content translator.
Ryan addressed his prior controversies in a lengthy thread here, and has even come forward with some of the methods he uses to find his rumors. While we cannot 100 % vouch for his veracity, his track record is good enough that we cannot ignore his claims.
Ryan said this about Jez Corden’s rumor:
“Jez Corden is correct. I first mentioned this back in June.”
Finally, we look at a post on the GamingLeaksandRumours subreddit by user BlueSheepz. NateDrake has come back on Resetera with this new statement:
“Square Enix has many things planned for Xbox, yes. Final Fantasy 16 is among them — which has been said several times now. FF Pixel Remaster Collection is the more immediate release coming from SqEx for Xbox. And the support extends beyond just Final Fantasy stuff.”
Finally, Alex Donaldson, an editor at VG24/7, has clarified his earlier statement about Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth coming to the Xbox. He had heard that such ports are not currently in development, but not that there are no plans to make them.
He then made this statement:
“What has happened: SE has softened its stance and they have decided, internally, that pretty much everything will come to Xbox (there will be random exceptions for myriad reasons, but broadly, the ‘defacto’ SE exclusivity is coming to an end and you’ll see them take a more Capcom-like approach). But that doesn’t mean that everything is in development right now.”
As they say, when there’s smoke, there’s fire. One person sharing a rumor is one thing, but multiple people converging towards the same rumor is something else entirely. We don’t know when Square Enix and Microsoft will reveal the pipeline for Final Fantasy games, but it will certainly make a nice counternarrative to how Microsoft is apparently losing games, as they bring their own games to other platforms.
