The full launch plans for the PlayStation 5 Pro have been leaked by Dealabs writer billbil-kun.
As rumors come and go, billbil-kun has been more consistent than most. The pattern that we have seen from them is they share the information shortly before the official reveal. In fact, it’s usually close enough that the reveal doesn’t seem to affect those announcement plans at all.
As reported by Video Games Chronicle, there will be an announcement coming “very soon”, but an official announcement is coming in the first half of September. Since September is literally next week, we may not have to wait that long at all.
The PlayStation 5 Pro will look the same as the new slimmer PlayStation 5 in the market now, with the addition of three striped (or are they physical ridges?) in the middle of the casing. The stripes have no function aside from differentiating it from the old model. Apparently, the faceplates on the new slimmer PlayStation 5 may be compatible with the PlayStation 5 Pro.
billbil-kun doesn’t know if Sony will once again offer two versions of the console. They speculate that the PlayStation 5 Pro may not have a disc drive by default. If that’s the case, then it would make sense for Sony to have prepared a disc drive upgrade path for the slimmer PlayStation 5 model years in advance. It would allow Sony to slap a slower retail price on the PlayStation 5 Pro than if it had to come with the disc drive by default.
Given all the details billbil-kun has shared, it seems that the long anticipation for this mid cycle upgrade is finally coming to an end. billbil-kun did not confirm any details on the hardware specifications, or the potential performance, or any internal technologies, such as the PSSR (PlayStation’s Spectral Super Resolution) upscaler. So we will also still have to wait and see if those will all turn out to be true, as well.
For those gamers who demanded higher performance than is possible on the PlayStation 5 now, your opportunity is finally coming. We don’t know if this can really deliver that old promise at the start of this console generation of having games run at 4K, 60 FPS. We assume Sony has spent at least some money on getting their own games up to that standard, and also getting third parties on board as well. How many third party games will be certified to be enhanced on the PlayStation 5 Pro? Will this turn out to be a worthwhile upgrade? And are consumers really going to upgrade from their PlayStation 4 consoles to this? That is the story that will play out in the coming year.
