Isn’t it ironic that one of the most important games of the year is Astro Bot? When the game was revealed during a State of Play event in May, people were blown away not only by its looks but by how much fun it looked to play! Sure, we had seen games featuring the robot before, but this felt different, this felt exciting! Then, when you look at all the other PS5 releases this year and what has and hasn’t come out, you realize that Sony is definitely banking on this title to do well! The team worked hard to make it for PS5…and potentially only for PS5.
Confused? MinnMax did a special video featuring creative director Nicolas Doucet, and he was asked 176 questions about Astro Bot, which is a lot! Anyway, among those questions was whether we might see the game get ported to the PS VR2. The answer was short but sweet:
“No chance. It’s designed for a different medium.”
He doubled down on that statement later on by saying that if they were to shift it to a VR perspective, it would be a “completely different game.” It’s not hard to see why he would say that, as the upcoming PS5 is a 3rd person-perspective platforming title and much of the gameplay revolves around that perspective. In contrast, when it comes to VR titles, you’re always in the first person; that’s the whole point. Thus, the team would’ve had to not just shift the perspective but make the gameplay work from that perspective, which could’ve been tricky.
For those wondering if there are ANY platforms the game could also come to, the answer is possibly PC. We know that Sony wants to expand where its exclusives go to, and that means bringing things to places like Steam. To that end, Doucet says:
“Well, we want to hear from you. Absolutely, we want to hear from you.”
So, if you want the game on PC, make sure Sony hears you!
Going back to the VR side of things, there could be another logical reason to not bring the game there: the PS VR 2 is doing TERRIBLE! Seriously, it’s fair to say that the VR headset is one of the biggest hardware flops that Sony has done in a while. It’s not only not selling, but they have stockpiles of the headset in storage and they’ve stopped producing them until they sell them!
So, even if they did bring Astro Bot to the PS VR 2, who would buy it?
