It’s true that not as many people were excited about the new Nintendo Direct Partner’s Showcase that has now officially aired as they would’ve been for the standard Direct that many hoped would debut soon. However, that doesn’t mean that there weren’t unique announcements that raised eyebrows or helped the Switch get a more bolstered lineup within its final year. For example, it was announced during the showcase that Sid Meier’s Civilization VII would arrive on the system next year. This is a huge deal for them, as they got the last entry in the franchise on Switch, so it’s only fair that they get the newest one!
Plus, as you’ll see below, Civilization VII isn’t just coming to Switch; it’s coming to the console a mere five days after the entry is released on other platforms. So, if you prefer to play this version of the game, you won’t have to wait a long time after release! One of the reasons that the Switch might be the preferred platform to play the renowned title is simply because of mobility.
After all, the world-building game is all about picking a civilization and then working with it throughout history so that you can expand, grow, learn, and more. It’s a game where you’re supposed to sit down and see how long things take to develop. That’s not always something people can do when they’re constantly on the go or have little time for themselves. In contrast, the Switch is a system where you can pick up the console and play it on the go or play it when you have the time to enjoy it, even if it’s only for a few minutes.
As the trailer for the Switch port highlights, there are new leaders that you can play in the world sim, including a new Queen who specializes in making partnerships that help her culture grow. Furthermore, as noted by executive producer Dennis Shirk in a chat with the Future Games Show, you can actually change your civilization/culture at the end of every age based on some of the choices you make:
“When you get to the end of an age, based on how you’ve played, based on the civ you’ve chosen, that determines the next cultures that are available to you to merge as you go into the next age,” Shirk revealed. He cited this as “a really cool growth mechanic that has you evolving and steering your culture as you go time.”
So be prepared to build something unique on Switch next year!
