As reported by Variety, a follow-up to the 2022 live-action Uncharted film is officially in the works. The announcement was made during Sony Pictures’ CineEurope presentation and shouldn’t come as a massive surprise given the success of the first film, which earned over $400 globally.
At the end of Uncharted, a brief post-credits scene teased a potential sequel. According to director Ruben Fleischer, this was to let audiences know that it wasn’t necessarily the end.
“It was really important for me that audiences know that the movie prior to the credits wasn’t the end of the Nate and Sully story, and that they would carry on their friendship — their partnership — on further adventures,” Fleischer said. “It was really exciting for me to get to shoot that scene and let audiences know that this, hopefully, wouldn’t be the last of them hearing of these two and that they’d be off in search of other treasures someplace else down the road.”
Back in February, Mark Wahlberg reported that the sequel’s script was finished and that he’d been told to grow his mustache for filming.
The Uncharted series began in 2007 with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, with many top-selling sequels released in the years after. Over 41 million copies have been sold, making it one of the best-selling video game franchises to date. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, released in 2016, was particularly well-received, winning Best Narrative and Best Performance at The Game Awards 2016.
Despite Naughty Dog claiming that it was done with the Uncharted game series, in April 2022, a studio recruited hinted that more titles may be in the pipeline.
