Recently, Amelia Tyler, the voice actress behind Baldur’s Gate 3‘s narrator, spoke out against the rise of AI and the negative impact it’s had on her team and her own mental health. With content creators able to clone her voice and make it say anything, more and more disturbing content has hit the web against her permission. The new company Speechless hopes to change that.
The company is introducing a new AI license, allowing actors to provide their voice talent and to earn a commission each time it’s used by devs. It’s unclear how this will impact actors in the long run, but Speechless hopes to be a way to experiment with AI more ethically.
“We can’t ignore the potential AI has for the games industry, but we need to approach this technology ethically – that’s what we aim to achieve when it comes to voice acting,” said Speechless CEO Peo Drangert.
“By offering a hybrid licence, developers can streamline their processes and experiment with different voice actors at a lower cost. At the same time, voice actors are compensated for their work and the work of their AI-generated voice, have greater opportunities to collaborate with studios and can work more flexibly. AI will continue to grow in the games sector, so we must use it responsibly to ensure a fairer industry.”
Right now, actors can choose whether or not to opt into the new service. If they do, they can also decide which projects they agree to work on and which they’d like to decline.
Unity reported recently that 62 percent of game studios are using AI in their development processes.
