Following the release of Dragon’s Dogma 2 on March 22, Capcom earned a tidal wave of player outrage, as the company decided to introduce a healthy dose of microtransactions into the long-awaited title. Now, Piotr Nielubowicz, the chief financial officer at CD Projekt Red is giving his two cents in a new chat with company investors.
“We do not see a place for microtransactions in the case of single-player games, but we do not rule out that we will use this solution in the future in the case of multiplayer projects,” Nielubowicz said.
Fans are no doubt happy to hear that the next Witcher game won’t require any extra transactions to enjoy. However, the next installment in the Cyberpunk series has been rumored to include multiplayer capabilities.
While the microtransactions available for Dragon’s Dogma 2 aren’t required to play the game—many items on sale can be earned in-game—players aren’t thrilled. The game is Capcom’s first $70 title, and there was no early indication that microtransactions would be included.
Despite mountains of user complaints, Dragon’s Dogma 2 boasted over 200,000 concurrent players on Steam at launch, becoming one of the most successful day-one releases for Capcom to date.
A survey is currently live to gauge player interest in a possible Dragon’s Dogma 2 DLC. This includes how much players would be willing to spend on new content.
In a recent call, CD Projekt Red also discussed the possibility of transforming their popular IPs into mobile games.
“The answer is yes, we are considering such a move,” said joint CEO Michał Nowakowski. “We have nothing to announce just yet, but when the time comes we’ll definitely share information.”
