You might not know mech shooter Hawken by its actual name, but odds are good you saw the game's gorgeous debut trailer from last March. After keeping a relatively low profile for the last year, developer Adhesive Games is finally ready to push Hawken back into the spotlight, announcing today that the game will launch as free-to-play title on December 12.
Adhesive co-founder Khang Le told Venture Beat that the game will take cues from other free to play titles like League of Legends and Team Fortress 2 by offering the core game for free and offering paid upgrades the help make the experience more customizable. Adhesive plans to operate the game as a service, adding new content the game for years after release.
Despite the game's jaw-dropping graphics, Le says the game will scale well to run on a wide variety of computers. It'll be locked at 60 FPS on high end computers, but will scale down to 30 FPS on weaker hardware.
Registration for the closed beta is now open on the game's official site, so head on over and sign up.
