There’s a new rumor suggesting that Call Of Duty is going back to the future in 2025.
As shared by Insider Gaming, the 2025 Call Of Duty game is set in 2030, and ostensibly, a sequel to Call of Duty Black Ops 2. Call of Duty Black Ops 2, which was released in 2012, is itself set in 2025.
Insider Gaming also reports that Activision has changed plans in regards to its DLC plans. Originally, Call Of Duty 2025, which is referred to internally by the codename Saturn, will have remastered maps from Call of Duty Black Ops 2.
Now, Call of Duty Black Ops 2 itself has not been remade or remastered, but this connects to an earlier rumor that Activision is reusing old maps as DLC for its newer games.
Some of those remastered Call of Duty Black Ops 2 maps will be used in the 2024 and 2025 games, but Activision may be doing some course correction because of recent events. As you may already know, Call of Duty Modern Warfare III was a commercial success, but sold less units than Call of Duty Modern Warfare II from just the year before.
Activision was presumably paying attention to these lower sales numbers, and noted the criticism that Call of Duty Modern Warfare III still felt like Call of Duty Modern Warfare II DLC. That was because of a perceived lack of content, especially the short single player campaign. In this case, some gamers complained that they were only playing on the same maps from last year.
So, Call of Duty 2025 will have both the remastered Call of Duty Black Ops 2 maps, and some completely new maps as well. Activision just wants to avoid the perception that they cheapened out on making content.
The Call of Duty Black Ops timeline is a bit of an odd beast, as it has already done the time jump into the far flung future. Call of Duty Black Ops III, which was released all the way back in 2015, was set in 2065. It imagined the world to have been dramatically changed by climate change and emerging new technologies.
Subsequently, Call of Duty Black Ops 4, which released in 2018, had a storyline set in 2043. So, Call of Duty 2025, will be firmly set in between Call of Duty Black Ops 2 and Call of Duty Black Ops 4. For fans who stuck by the series this whole time, this may be a way for Treyarch to add to the game’s lore, and possibly tie up any loose ends.
