Monolith: Wonder Woman Is A Nemesis System Game, Not Live Service

November 20, 2023 by Ryan Parreno

WB really should throw Monolith and Wonder Woman fans a bone here.

Warner Bros has officially denied that the upcoming Wonder Woman video game will be a live service game.

IGN shared a statement provided by Warner Bros about the title:

“Wonder Woman is a single-player action-adventure game set in a dynamic open-world. This third person experience will allow players to become Diana of Themyscira and introduce an original story set in the DC Universe, while also featuring the Nemesis System.

Wonder Woman is not being designed as a live service.”

Speculation that Wonder Woman could be a live service game spread because of a job listing for the studio making the game, Washington based Monolith Productions. The job listing indicated that it would be “nice to have” if the applicant had “experience helping maintain a live software product or game”.

And of course, this also came under the specter of Warner Bros owner David Zaslav threatening gamers with a live service universe made from all of Warner Bros’ properties.

But we really shouldn’t bury the lede here because fans have still been wondering what to expect from  Monolith Productions’ superhero crossover. It has been six years since their last published title: Middle-earth: Shadow of War.

Here’s another things fans may have forgotten; the innovative and original Nemesis System that Monolith Productions came up with for their Middle-earth games was copyrighted by Warner Bros. Now, this does not necessarily mean other companies cannot come up with a similar game design. There is some leeway in copyright law for differentiation, and IP holders being tolerant.

But it does mean that we should mainly expect Monolith Productions to be at the forefront of making Nemesis System games. Wonder Woman will be an important game in this regard, as its success or failure will prove whether Monolith can carry the game design paradigm over to other IPs.

We should also presume that this game is being produced outside of DC Studios’ ten year plan to right the steering on its cross media universe. We actually still don’t know if outgoing Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot, or if her likeness, will be appearing in this game, or if they will simply choose to make their own take.

In fact, and this is quite obvious, we still don’t know a lot about this project at all. And that’s what enabled speculation to come out of the woodwork to begin with. While we understand that modern day video game advertising now works better closer to release, it definitely would not hurt to give Wonder Woman and Monolith fans a bone.
