Insomniac has revealed their choice of their main Spider-Man for their Marvel’s Spider-Man video games.
If you have played the games, you already know who this one is. But if you want to play through it first before getting spoiled, this is your last chance to leave.
Okami13_ revealed these spoilers on Twitter:
“*Ending spoilers*
This was kind of teased at the end of SM2 so it shouldn’t be a huge surprise.
I think Miles will also become a mentor for you know who similar to how Peter did for him.
Final note.. they did not say Peter is GONE or that he won’t be playable as Spider-Man in the next game.
Just that Miles basically gets a “promotion” to main Spider-Man while Peter focuses on the Emily-May Foundation. For now.”
In an interview with Gizmodo, narrative director Ben Arfmann and advanced writer Brittney Morris explained how they decided on these choices, and really, how they shaped up their own independent Marvel universe.
Morris had this to say about choosing Miles over Peter:
“It always felt very natural, and I think we all collectively thought it would happen. To me, it shows a great deal of evolution from Miles; at the beginning of the game, we see him struggling to figure out what he wants to do with his life. By the end, we had Miles carrying the burden of saving the city, and also carrying Pete when Pete wasn’t strong enough to carry himself at various points.
That’s what’s been so cool about writing a story about two Spider-Men: they’re both strong, and one of them can be strong when the other is not. By the end, Miles is more confident and he’s like, “Yeah, I got this. How much worse can things get after what we just went through?””
But Arfmann also pointed out that they didn’t think of Peter’s and Miles’ relationship as one between teacher and student:
“We always knew that this wasn’t a mentor-mentee story, this was about two Spider-Men who are incredibly good at what they do. You see in the opening with Sandman that they’ve got this solid partnership, which then gets challenged by not just Harry and the Symbiote, but also Mr. Negative. All these things are coming in to challenge that core partnership.
Throughout development, we pushed and pulled things in different directions, because we pride ourselves on being a team where great ideas can come from anywhere. But we always had this confidence that we were going to do service to both Spider-Men and tell an exceptional story starring them both.”
