Overwatch’s Latest Update Adds Competitive Play And Punishments For Quitters

April 7, 2016 by Ian Miles Cheong

A new update for Overwatch adds a ton of new content, including competitive play.

Just a couple of days after releasing its last update, which saw the addition of some new skins and a replacement for Tracer’s Over the Shoulder pose, Blizzard has hit Overwatch with some patch notes to show players exactly what’s changed. The new update also deals with quitters who leave games mid-match with a newly implemented system.

The patch also adds Competitive Play, which is a ranked mode for the game, and new rewards for level progression. The newly introduced punishment system will penalize players for quitting during matches.

If a player quits enough games that their completion percentage is below the required threshold, they will receive a warning. Should they choose to keep quitting games, they will lose 75% of their collected experience in future games until they fix their percentage by playing more games and not quitting. The completion percentage is based on the 20 most recent games, so you shouldn’t have to worry about having a permanently messed up account.

The addition of Competitive Play will allow players level 25 and above to participate and earn special ranks through a series of divisions and tiers in seasons that last a month long each. Players can participate solo or with groups of other players. The mode will queue you up against players of equal skill in a similar division and tier.

New progression rewards that have been added in the recent patch include new sprays, icons and voice lines. Less popular, uglier sprays have been removed. There are also new legendary skins to download.

Overwatch will be out this May for PC, Xbox One and PS4.
