The last we heard about the PlayStation Vita's Remote Play feature that it would need to be implemented by developers on a case by case basis. In that brief instant, our collective dream of playing Mass Effect 3 on the toilet was crushed forever.
Well, consider it officially uncrushed. YouTuber Homer49 has uploaded footage of his imported Vita streaming full PS3 games, including Red Dead Redemption (above), Mortal Kombat, Arkham Asylum, and Battlefield 3. By running custom firmware 3.55 (or 3.41) and registering the Vita as a mobile phone, he's able to stream any PS3 game to the handheld.
Though the Vita has fewer buttons than the PS3 controller, there's an official feature that allows you to map portions of the touchscreen to the L2, L3, R2, and R3 buttons. In fact, everything you see here was done without any modifications to the Vita, implying that Sony could, in fact, offer universal Remote Play support with a few minor changes to the PS3's firmware.
