Xbox Series X And S Hits 60 FPS With Latest Update To The Long Dark

April 6, 2023 by Ryan Parreno

While it’s possible for Hinterland to improve it on PlayStation 5 too, Xbox Series are the best console for the game right now.

A new update for survival game The Long Dark has raised its performance for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles.

Hinterland Studio has published a new update for The Long Dark that raises framerate to 60 FPS for both consoles.

As reported by GameInfinitus, tests made on the game after the update confirm that The Long Dark now reaches this optimal performance, but there are some caveats.

If you play the game on an Xbox Series S, the game runs at 1080p or below. On this platform, The Long Dark maintains its consistent 60 FPS as promised.

On the other hand, the Xbox Series X occasionally dips in that framerate down to 50 up to 55 FPS. It should be noted on this platform, The Long Dark will be displaying at 4K resolution. So it isn’t quite as good as hoped, but it is still impressive performance.

If you didn’t quite believe that, we should talk about the PlayStation version then. The PlayStation 5 does not have a native port of The Long Dark, so you will have to play the PlayStation 4 version on this platform. And the PlayStation 4 version of The Long Dark runs at a dynamic resolution of 1440p, locked at 30 FPS.

Some people may debate the merits on whether resolution or framerate are more important for a better looking game, but there should be no debate that better framerate makes it easier to play a game.

More importantly than that, both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 can’t run The Long Dark at 60 FPS. Of course, it is possible for Hinterland to update that at a later date, but at the moment, it is the Xbox Series consoles that flex their performance over PlayStation 5.

If you were wondering, yes, The Long Dark is also on Nintendo Switch. On the Switch, games target a 720p framerate. However, the mobile CPU on the Switch makes it unlikely that Hinterland can raise its framerate up to 60 FPS. As this test shows, the console does a commendable job of maintaining a 30 FPS framerate most of the time.

In the end, if you were looking for the best performance for The Long Dark, you should get it on PC. But seriously, the best console platform for The Long Dark, where you can get that high framerate experience without tinkering, will be on Xbox Series X and S.
