There are numerous reasons to praise the Nintendo Switch. Of course, you could focus on its sales numbers or the quality of its AAA titles, but one thing that many have sought to praise is the wide array of titles from Nintendo’s vast library that have been brought to the Switch. It’s not just games with Mario or Link that have dominated. Other franchises, including “lesser” franchises, have done well too. Many felt this would be a sign that nearly every major IP from the Nintendo library would show up, but not all have. That could change a little if the rumor about F-Zero GX is true.
The high-octane racing franchise starring Captain Falcon hasn’t had a main entry since F-Zero GX on the Nintendo Gamecube. Despite that, the character has been a proud member of the Super Smash Bros roster since the beginning, and fans even panicked once when they thought he wasn’t in the game. Those same fans have been asking for years for Nintendo to bring back the racing title, yet nothing has happened, nothing official, that is. As we’ve learned, many developers have gone to Nintendo to ask for permission to make a new entry in the series, but nothing was approved.
You might remember an early Switch title, Fast RMX, that was basically F-Zero with a new look and name. Fans were happy to play it but mad that Nintendo didn’t give these people the IP to make an official entry.
Thankfully, a Nintendo insider claims the Gamecube title could be up for a remaster by Next Level Games. However, they note that this is unconfirmed for various reasons, but it is a rumor going around, so you never know.
But is this a good thing that they’re making a remaster versus a full-on new title? In this case, yes. The reasoning is simple. The franchise has been dormant for a very long time. Many gamers in the newer generations haven’t had a chance to play the series, more than likely. So bringing back the remaster would be an “easy” way to show them the franchise.
Furthermore, Nintendo could gauge the interest in the franchise based on how well the remaster sells. The remaster would indeed need to be a good port to improve the sales numbers, but Next Level Games have made many quality titles in the past, so that should be an issue.
Until this is official, take the rumor with a grain of salt.
