Bungie Stands Against SOPA: “We all agree SOPA sucks”

January 14, 2012 by Ian Miles Cheong

Bungie takes a stance against SOPA, in opposition to it.

The creators of the Halo series are standing firm against the legislation that threatens free speech on the internet, the “Stop Online Piracy Act,” or SOPA.

The developers published a blog post today stating that while they “tend to keep (their) collective nose out of state affairs,” they “all agree that SOPA sucks.”

Bungie recognizes the clumsy attempt to curtail online piracy through the bill, which would negatively impact both the games they make and the people who play them. They called upon readers and fans of the studio to contact their representatives in the United States Congress.

“Bungie is opposed to any legislation that curtails free speech, stifles innovation, and prevents the open sharing of information on the Internet. SOPA fits that bill. If it passes, it will hurt our community, the gaming community at large, and it could very well cripple the kind of games we love to create and play,” reads the post.

“Just like online piracy, that would be downright criminal.”
