Nintendo has announced today that they are developing two new Pokémon games slated for release this year, validating our report yesterday on Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon. The report stated that two games had been registered as trademarks in Europe.
The two titles will be available this holiday season for the 3DS. Nintendo made the announcement during a six-minute Pokémon Nintendo Direct briefing today, and released a new trailer to showcase the upcoming titles, which like their predecessors are released in a pair of games that include largely the same content but with some exclusives for each individual edition.
Nintendo declined to reveal any gameplay details about the upcoming titles, but shared a video containing some concept art and character designs.
“The Pokémon core series games are the center of the Pokémon universe and provide some of the most memorable Pokémon moments for our fans,” said J.C. Smith, senior director of Consumer Marketing at The Pokémon Company International. “I can’t wait to see what fans think of the new adventures they’ll find in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon.”
Nintendo revealed that Pokémon from Pokémon Omega Ruby, Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, Pokémon X, and Pokémon Y can also be transferred to Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon through Pokémon Bank.
Tomorrow will be the 20th anniversary of the Pokémon franchise, which debuted on February 27, 1996. Nintendo will be hosting a huge celebration for the occasion, including a full day livestream on Twitch. Three classic Pokemon titles, Red, Blue and Yellow, will be released on the 3DS eShop tomorrow.
