Stephen Curry may have been made NBA 2K16 cover star, but there is one part of the game where the top player doesn’t fit it. Ironically, it’s in the gameplay itself.
To be clear, this is not exactly a case of Stephen Curry being such a good player that 2K Sports can’t accomodate him. Of course, year after year 2K has put top players past and present in their games,. Balancing the roster out has always been a challenge, but 2K has never called this task impossible.
Instead, the issue centers around a situation unique to basketball video games, called cheesing. If you’re an avid NBA 2K player, you know what this is. It’s how players will cheese, or rush to score as many three point shooters in a game’s final seconds as possible. This is essentially an exploit of how basketball games work that some older games never had a fix for.
Nowadays, 2K’s solution involves adding variables to consider if players earned that three point shot. The game factors in the difficulty of shooting off the dribble, fatigue from repeating the same three point shooter, and more.
Now, 2K’s real problem is Stephen Curry is in such a high point in his career that he is throwing out absurd three pointers frequently. In fact, he does it so often he beats his video game version. For now, 2K’s fix to this solution is to actually raise Curry’s scoring rate so he isn’t penalized for cheesing as other characters. 2K realizes this precisely brings back the issue of cheesing, but for now, this is their best solution.
