I’m not even going to lie, I’m so excited about South Park: The Game that I’m not against just giving Obsidian my wallet and telling them to go hog wild – and with recent news of Paper Mario elements making it into the game as well, it just gets better.
It turns out that the brilliant Trey Parker and Matt Stone are actually pretty big Paper Mario fans, and were quite keen to name drop it in meetings with Obsidian, along with a few other games.
In an interview with Game Informer, lead designer Matt McClean explained the combat is powered by ‘reflex widgets,’ timed buttons pressed during special attacks that changes the effect of the attack. Basically, press the buttons at the right times and your attack will do more damage. This is something you might remember from a certain Mario game that has something to do with paper.
Oh yeah, and remember the classes? Fighter, mage, thief, cleric and that mystery class? Turns out that final class is Jew. Yes. Jew class.
“Each one of these classes will flavor how you approach combat and the Jew is going to sort of our Paladin/Monk type character.” McClean described. “The current design for him is that he’s a high-risk/high-reward character. The closer you get to death, the more powerful his abilities become. So, your strongest when you’re at one hit point but you’re also just about to die.”
Given that you talk to Cartman to choose your class, I’m hardly surprised. Check out the rest of the interview over at Game Informer.
