It’s been a rough 24 hours for the team at PlatinumGames, and we’re being very generous with that statement. If we were to speak the honest truth, the company was roasted alive by much of the internet after a particular revelation came out. If you didn’t see our story yesterday, we’re talking about the revelation dropped by none other than Hellena Taylor, the original voice of Bayonetta. Many were curious why she wasn’t going to be in Bayonetta 3. PlatinumGames revealed that it was due to a scheduling conflict, which has happened across media in the past. However, Taylor has revealed that this was a lie.
Instead, the truth was that Taylor was given an incredibly insulting lowball offer for how much they would pay her to be the Umbra Witch again in Bayonetta 3. Just as insulting, she had to audition to be Bayonetta again! When the back and forth ended, she was offered just $4000 for the entire game. Given the work that goes into doing VO, that’s an insulting offer, and the internet knew it.
Due to this, many people spoke out about what Taylor went through and rallied around her. That included some familiar names like David Hayter, the voice of Solid Snake.
Other actors, including one from the Breath of the Wild games, noted how much they got paid for those titles and how a different game was much better to them financially due to them receiving the ability to earn more based on the game’s profits.
Even streamers were getting in on the action, like famed eSports streamer and host Ovilee May, who, after hearing what happened to Hellena Taylor, posted this immediate reaction.
Her thoughts were echoed by fans, who went to Twitter to blast PlatinumGames, specifically their head in Hideki Kamiya. Not long after Helena made her video posts, Kamiya denied the allegations and warned fans what would happen if they didn’t “follow the rules.” Well, fans don’t follow such rules when they’re passionate and swarmed the man, and that led to this.
That last line is the critical part here. The man himself was blocking people en masse because they were asking about what happened with Taylor. Kamiya was already an infamous person on Twitter because of his “random blocking,” but this took it to the next level. For him to straight-up delete his Twitter shows how overwhelmed he was by fans.
No doubt some will take this as a sign of the developer’s guilt, but fans should try to remain calm until they clear the air about the subject.
No matter what happens, though, this chatter will affect the launch of Bayonetta 3. We can’t say whether fans will boycott it in large numbers as Taylor wanted, but it might happen on some scale.
