There’s been a lot of speculation surrounding the next instalment of the Assassin’s Creed franchise in recent months. Rumours have been circulating for some time about the direction the next game could head in. However, with suggestions and “sources” providing a number of different themes and locations for the game, it’s been hard to pin anything concrete down. That’s pretty much still the case until we hear directly from Ubisoft. However, there’s some new information just in that’s potentially leaked some new intel.
In a tweet posted earlier this afternoon, known gaming leaks hunter Rebs Gaming claims to have discovered some new information on the next Assassin’s Creed game. According to YouTuber j0nathan, that is. As always, it’s key to take this sort of thing with a pinch of salt. However, you can check out the full scope of the new intel in the tweet below.
The tweet claims that the new Assassin’s Creed, currently codenamed Rift, will in fact be called Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Additionally, the gameplay will take place in Baghdad as previously suggested back in July. Other key suggestions are that the game will be released in the Spring of 2023 and will take much more of a “back to basics” approach when it comes to gameplay. If true, this should come as a pleasant surprise for longstanding fans of the franchise, some of whom have felt that Assassin’s Creed’s core gameplay components of stealth and assassination have wandered off on a tangent in recent years.
While again, caution is advised with any kind of insider claims, there may be some truth behind parts of the latest leak. The tweet has also since been acknowledged by industry journalist Jason Schreier, which may lend a bit of credence to some of the claims made in the new information. Schreier claims that his source, “a person familiar” with the truth behind the matter, presumably, has confirmed that parts of this new leak are accurate, but others are definitely not.
Schreier had previously shared information about the game’s potential shift to Baghdad, in response to the rumours at that time that Assassin’s Creed would next be heading to an Aztec setting. Not long after that came Jeff Grubb’s claim that the series would actually be moving to Japan. Basically, it’s all been very up in the air, but this new information seems to corroborate Schreier’s initial rebuttal of the Aztec theme.
Whether or not some, or even any of this information is actually true remains to be seen. However, it may not be too long until we have some kind of confirmed update from Ubisoft on the actual direction of the next game. The publisher is widely expected to update fans of the franchise on the future of the Assassin’s Creed series during the upcoming Ubisoft Forward event on September 10. With that just around the corner, we may find out if there’s any weight behind this potential Baghdad-based adventure called Mirage in a couple of weeks’ time.
