Squadron 42 is designed to be the single-player portion of Star Citizen. It’s a fully featured campaign that’s designed in the same vein as the Wing Commander games, which were made by Star Citizen’s creator Chris Roberts way back in the 1990s.
Squadron 42 was planned to be released alongside Star Citizen and free for anyone who backed the game’s crowdfund, which its developer Cloud Imperium Games claims has exceeded the $100m mark. Today, the studio announced that in just a couple of weeks from today, on February 14, the two games will be split up and no longer available as a single package.
It shouldn’t be news for anyone who’s followed the game’s development, as the publisher revealed late last year that the two games would eventually be split. This means that you’ll have to buy either game separately as standalone titles.
If you’ve yet to order Star Citizen, you can do so now before the split to get both games for $45. The developer has not disclosed how much the game will cost as a standalone title, but gamers should definitely expect it to cost more than it does right now.
Squadron 42 is a full fledged single-player game featuring the talents of Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, and a few other well-known actors, who will be playing the roles of the game’s main and supporting characters. It also sets the stage for Star Citizen. You can take a behind-the-scenes look at the game in a recently released video featuring X-Files star Gillian Anderson in her role as Captain McLaren.
