Rumor: There Was A PS4 Version Of GTA 6, But It’s Now Cancelled

March 3, 2026 by Ryan Parreno

This was an easy decision to make.

Dataminers made a fascinating discovery about GTA 6’s Title IDs.

Yesterday, we reported on the discovery of these GTA 6 Title IDs on the PlayStation database. PlayStation Game Size speculated that they could be hinting at the start of pre-orders on PS5.

However, another Twitter user who goes by Amethyst shared something new:

Anyway, everyone is talking about GTA6 having two IDs, but no one is talking about the fact that both are linked to “PS4”

Rockstar started GTA 6’s principal production in 2020, the same year that Sony released the PlayStation 5 and Microsoft released the Xbox Series X|S.

So it’s easy to imagine that Rockstar initially targeted the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but they changed plans rapidly because of the newer consoles.

It’s certainly troublesome that it took Rockstar so long that GTA 6 could launch a year or even months away from an even newer generation to replace the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

But this speaks to not only the game’s struggles in production, but just how much longer and harder it is to make AAA games in general.
