One of the things that Gotham Knights has made clear is that this is going to be a very special look at Gotham City, and will be unlike many other versions of the city that we’ve seen in video games before. One of the biggest reasons for this is that in the first 10 minutes of the game, Batman dies, and leaves four of his proteges: Nightwing, Red Hood, Batgirl, and Robin to defend his city in his absence. The fact that all four of these characters are alive and have worked with Batman in the past shows how long things have been going on in terms of a timeline.
And that has led many to speculate about who else might be in the game. The team noted recently that Joker wasn’t going to be in the title, but fans were also curious about Damian Wayne. The actual “Son of Batman” via Bruce’s on-again/off-again flame Talia Al Ghul. In the comics, Damian becomes Robin, so many wonder if he’s lingering out there in some way. At San Diego Comic-Con, we got an answer:
“It’s hard for me to answer that question without a major spoiler in the storyline,” Gotham Knights creative director Patrick Redding said. “There are reasons that will become very clear why Damian is not in the picture.”
While we obviously don’t know those reasons now, it could be that in this version of Gotham, Bruce hasn’t met Talia, or Talia doesn’t exist in this universe. Or it could be that Bruce died before “certain things could happen”, it’s hard to say.
It is noted by the team that Robin (Tim Drake) was both the youngest and the one who was partnered with Batman before he died, so he’s still “learning who he is.” Perhaps that plays a part in this too.
