Developer Michel Ancel has said that he is in fact making the long-awaited Beyond Good & Evil 2.
During an hour-long chat with Double Fine’s Tim Schafer Ancel was asked specifically if he’s actually developing the game and said, “Yeah but it’s difficult because it’s hard for me to redo the same kind of game two times, so I always want to do something different.
“It has to be great. When we started [the first] game there was not that much pressure.”
Ubisoft did reveal a teaser trailer for the title all the way back in 2008 but stopped short of actually naming it or officially confirming the game. Ancel is known to be working on something at the publisher in addition to creating PS4 game WiLD at his independent studio.
There were rumours last summer that Beyond Good & Evil 2 had been playtested at Ubisoft from a typically reliable French site and while the game hasn’t materialised since we certainly hope to see or at least hear something about the game.
In February 2014 Ancel discussed the game’s development, comparing its lengthy production time to that of Sony’s The Last Guardian – a game which was re-announced last year at E3 and is due for release on PS4 later in 2016. Ancel also encouraged developers to pursue more varied art styles and graphics options during development rather than focusing on achieving photorealism.
You can watch the chat below, in which Ancel also reveals a pretty extraordinary story about an Italian developer who worked on the PC version of Beyond Good & Evil at the 49-minute mark.
